Then/Now – Irumbai Road

Auroville Archives has a treasure trove of photographs from decades past, and one of the many things we can do with them is compare what the landscape of Auroville looked like when a photo was taken and what the same spot looks like now. So we are starting a series called Then/Now, which juxtaposes an old photo from our collection with the current situation of same scene.

For the first post in this series, we are not using a photo that depicts an emblematic Auroville building or landscape feature, but rather a serene photo of a spot that people who have spent some time exploring the area around Auroville will know well. This photo is taken on the road to Irumbai from Kottakarai, as we near the full left turn in the middle of the fields, as the road skirts the northern edge of Irumabi lake. Unfortunately we’re not sure when the old photo was taken!
