1969 (?) Brochure With Galaxy Plan

By the time the year 1969 ended, many different brochures about Auroville had been printed. The one below (if it indeed is from 1969), is one of the first brochures to include an image of the Galaxy Plan. The Galaxy Plan was shown to the public during the inauguration ceremony of Auroville on 28th February 1968, but was not included in the brochure that came out in April 1968, which showcased the inauguration.

As mentioned in previous posts, the brochures that came out from 1966 to 1969 have traced the development of the urban design of Auroville. After Roger Anger was asked by The Mother to design the township of Auroville in March 1965, he (and his team) first came up with the Nebula Plan in March 1966, which was printed in the 1966 brochure. This was the first brochure published on Auroville. Then in early-1967 they developed the Megastructure Plan, which was printed in the 1967 brochure. By January 1968 the design had evolved into the Galaxy Plan, which is shown in the brochure below. After this of course, the Galaxy Plan has remained constant as the urban design for Auroville.

There are many other interesting stories of the early days of Auroville that these early brochures can tell, and the Archives hopes to explore them in the (near) future!
