Invitations to the Inauguration

Before Auroville’s inauguration ceremony on 28th February 1968, invitation cards were sent out. A couple of days before the event, it seems that the Auroville Post Office was also inaugurated.

On the day of the opening of the post office, 26th February 1968, the first of the two postcards below (affixed with a stamp portraying Sri Aurobindo) was postmarked with Auroville as the origin point. What’s interesting is that the postcard depicts the Macrostructure Plan as representing the township of Auroville. Just two days later, on another postcard postmarked on the day of Auroville’s inauguration, it is the Galaxy Plan that represents the township. This mirrors the transition from the Macrostructure Plan representing Auroville before the inauguration, to the Galaxy Plan representing it at and after the the event. This transition has been discussed in the coverage of the early brochures of Auroville as well.
