On February 28, 1968, the Auroville Charter was broadcast live at Auroville’s inauguration ceremony, read out first in French by The Mother from her room in the Ashram at Pondicherry. It was then read out in other languages by various people present at the inauguration.
The Charter was prepared and written in the weeks before the inauguration. Here is the Charter written in French by The Mother:

The Auroville Charter
- Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But, to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
- Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
- Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
- Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.

One response to “Auroville Charter”
“To live in Auroville,One must be a willing Servitor Of Divine Consciousness”
The only condition and mool mantra …..
At our individual level of consciousness, we have interpreted and if there is no common minimum understanding,in practical terms, the devide will continue unless we find a way to basic minimum agreed discipline .
MOTHER has defined it clearly.
All we need to do is to reflect on the most relevent and agree to a working descipline,we have a chance but quotes to impress all and sundry is not the way.
There are 2 quotes in specific, that are clear without a NY ambiguity of language, enough to start with….
